will present Mapping Szolnok's COVID signs
Abstract
Linguistic landscapes of all sorts surround us every day. In the current pandemic situation we are surrounded by cautionary signs and safety measures wherever we go. This study analyses COVID-related signs in Szolnok to see how the information is being conveyed and how accessible it is for foreigners in the county town. Various languages are taught all over the town's schools, thereby making foreign language knowledge accessible for the citizens, however, foreigners are rare in this area. The weight of these two factors in the life of the citizens can be compared looking at the signs based on one of Durk Gorter's definitions in his 2006 article, Introduction: The Study of the Linguistic Landscape as a New Approach to Multilingualism which was used as a basis for this paper, as according to it, the languages appearing on signs can serve as a representation of said languages in the region.
