will present BEAUTY vs PAROXYSM OF REALITY IN ˮHENRY AND JUNE” BY ANAÏS NIN
Abstract
Beauty and ugliness are both mediated by our inner self, by our subjectivity. Taking this into account, ugliness means lack of beauty. In this study, Platoʼs four types of beauty will be discussed with given examples from Ninʼs text: the physical beauty, the beauty of the soul, the moral beauty and the beauty itself, represented as an ideal. Our endeavour wants to reveal whether beauty and ugliness can reach such a tension that they escalate, on the verge of permutation into their opposing drive. In Anaïs Ninʼs diaristic work, the plurivalent character of beauty is not embodied by one person, but it is fragmented into three sides.
