will present Flush: A Biography by Virginia Woolf and The Sweetshop Owner by Graham Swift: Towards Individualism
Abstract
The purpose of this paper is to compare the novels Flush: A Biography by Virginia Woolf and The Sweetshop Owner by Graham Swift based on ideas of Woolf’s essay On Being Ill. Illness means isolation, and thus contemplation of one’s life and moments of revelation. The characters move towards what Hofstede named individualism, by leaving aside the collectivist culture’s rules.
