will present Qi or IQ: The Study of Representation of Mulan in Two Disney’s Versions
Abstract
The overall purpose of the study was to examine the two versions of Disney’s Mulan (1998 and 2020) in terms of identity and gender issues benefiting from gendered discourses. The animated version of this story earned over $304 million and received several awards; however, the live-action one was considered highly unsuccessful in the film industry since it only could gross 70$ million and received negative reviews from both the audience, especially the Chinese ones, displaying inaccurate depictions of Chinese history and mishandling of Chinese cultural elements. The results revealed that the two versions differ from each other in terms of construction, performative, negotiation construction in interaction, and representation. Additionally, since it is also encouraging to compare the perceptions of Chinese audiences in receiving the two versions in these issues, with the help of the qualitative part, a questionnaire was designed and distributed among them.
