will present Linguistic differences between abstracts written by native and non-native speakers of English: A pilot study
Abstract
In this paper, we analyze a corpus consisting of abstracts collected from MA linguistic theses written by students from the United Kingdom, China, and Hungary. We make use of several features derived from the linguistic analysis of abstracts. Moreover, we also perform some machine learning experiments in order to see what kind of features are the most useful for distinguishing the language use of the three groups of English speakers. We find that it is primarily morphological and semantic features that distinguish native and non-native language use and that morphological features seem to contribute the most to the automatic distinction of the three groups of speakers. As for the two groups of non-native speakers, Hungarians tend to use their personal viewpoint more frequently while their Chinese counterparts prefer to be more objective.
