Department of English Language and Literature

The Department of English Language and Literature, in its current form, was established in 1995 alongside the expansion and diversification of the Faculty of Letters at the University of Oradea. However, the teaching of English in higher education in Oradea has a long-standing tradition dating back to the 1960s.

At both the undergraduate and master's levels, there is a constant effort to align professional training curricula with the principles of the Bologna Declaration; these objectives are reflected in the modular structure of courses, the diversification of electives, and the assurance of qualifications appropriate to the degrees awarded upon graduation.

The department’s activities focus on several key areas, primarily teaching, with an emphasis on fostering strong collaboration with students and maintaining a positive educational environment. Both faculty and students are actively involved in various projects and partnerships with institutions, universities, and schools—such as the "Gheorghe Șincai" County Library, the Țara Crișurilor Museum and the "Friends of the Țara Crișurilor Museum" Association, the Bihor County School Inspectorate (ISJ), the Association for the Promotion of Cooperation in Education, Emanuel University, and the "Emanuil Gojdu," "Iosif Vulcan," and "M. Eminescu" National Colleges. These collaborations facilitate the organization and successful execution of interactive and cultural-educational activities, including the Foreign Language Reading Club, Cultural Evenings (featuring dramatic readings), Creative Writing, the Reading Club, and the "Blending Arts" series (such as "Reading a Sculpture" or "Reading an Artifact").

The English Department of the Faculty of Letters in Oradea encourages students to participate in various inter-university competitions—such as the *Shades of Meaning* translation contest (organized annually by the English Language Unit of the Faculty of Letters, Theology, and History at the West University of Timișoara) or the translation contest for pupils and students organized by the "1 Decembrie" University of Alba Iulia—to help them become increasingly competitive and competent in the labor market.

As an extracurricular initiative, the English Department organizes the Students' Drama Club—an activity designed to foster artistic sensibilities, creativity, and expressive communication skills. This project is highly popular among our students and culminates in the staging of a theatrical performance.

Upholding the tradition of international cultural exchange, the English Department organizes the biennial international conference *Cultural Texts and Contexts in the English-Speaking World* (held in late March of odd-numbered years) as well as the annual academic event *Seminars in Anglophone Studies* (held every May).

The English Department of the Faculty of Letters in Oradea aims to consistently engage all stakeholders in the academic process—whether in research or teaching—ensuring that our future graduates benefit from openness, genuine opportunities, and professionalism upon completing their studies.
